Philadelphia City, the nation's largest city with a soda tax, has the right to charge its 1.5-cents-per-ounce levy on sweetened beverages, the state Supreme Court ruled in a defeat for retailers and distributors.

The Philadelphia version of the tax was designed to help fund pre-kindergarten programs, parks and other services. It raised $79 million last year, but the impact on the cost of soda was large. The tax adds about $1 to the cost of a soda 2-liter bottle. A 12-pack of sodas went up $2.16.

The new Rhode Island's taxes changes apply to manufacturers, wholesalers and distributors. A brewer that brews beer in Rhode Island and that is actively and directly owned, managed, and operated by an authorized legal entity that has owned, managed, and operated a brewery in Rhode Island for at least 12 consecutive months receives a tax exemption on the first 100,000 barrels of beer that it produces and distributes in Rhode Island in any calendar year.

Philadelphia City Approves Sweetened Beverage Tax

Philadelphia city has become the first large city in the United States to approve a soda tax. The new tax will include regular sodas, diet sodas, sports drinks, energy drinks and other nonalcoholic beverages with added sweeteners.

The planned tax is slated to go into effect in January 2017 and is higher than the penny-per-ounce levy on sugary drinks in Berkeley, CA. Other parts of the country are looking to similar measures, including Oakland, San Francisco and Boulder, CO.

Georgia DOR is revising State alcohol license processes

The Georgia Department of Revenue (DOR) is revising State alcohol license processes. the changes went into effect March 1, 2016. The DOR wants businesses applying for beer/wine licenses to file all alcohol license applications up to 30 days in advance of the anticipated date of the local tax license.Timely filing will allow the state to issue alcohol license in 2 to 3 business days after the local license is issued.
